The prepositions -
Wie z. B. bei den Nomen, den Adjektiven und den Adverbien handelt es sich auch bei den Präpositionen um eine Wortart.
Es gibt über 100 Präpositionen in der englischen Sprache.
Im Vergleich mit den anderen Wortarten ist dies eine relativ geringe Anzahl. Dabei ist in den meisten Sätzen, die mündlich oder schriftlich produziert werden, fast immer eine Präposition mit eingebunden.
Die Funktion, die die Wortart Präposition auszufüllen hat, besteht darin, Satzteile zu verbinden. Die Präposition ist demnach als Funktionswort also ein Verbindungswort.
Eine Präposition zeigt an, in welchem Verhältnis ein Nomen oder Pronomen zu einem anderen Wort im Satz steht.
Deshalb wird Präposition im Deutschen auch häufig treffend mit Verhältniswort übersetzt.
Eine Präposition ändert sich nicht in Zahl und Geschlecht, kennt also keinen Plural und wird auch nicht konjugiert oder dekliniert.
Eine Präposition kann nie alleine stehen; sie muss immer vor einem Wort oder einer Gruppe von Wörtern stehen (lat. prae = dt. vor, lat. ponere = dt. stellen), welche man allgemein als präpositionalen Ausdruck oder präpositionale Gruppe bezeichnet. Diese präpositionalen Ausdrücke helfen dann beispielsweise die Bedeutung des Verbs näher zu erläutern oder zu bestimmen.
Es gilt die Regel, dass eine Präposition nie vor einem Verb steht, aber immer vor einem Nomen.

Die Präpositionen in, of, und to gehören zu den zehn am meist gebrauchten Wörtern der englischen Sprache.
Präpositionen gehören zu den häufigsten Fehlerquellen für deutsche Lernende der englischen Sprache. Ein Grund dafür liegt darin, dass die englischen Präpositionen oft keiner auf Anhieb nachvollziehbaren Logik folgen.
Man schaue sich nur die beiden nachfolgenden Sätze an:

Es ist daher ratsam, Präpositionen, die zu Nomen, Verben, Adjektiven und idiomatischen Wendungen gehören beim ersten Auftreten immer und ohne Ausnahme sofort ordentlich -
Man erspart sich auf diese Art und Weise eine Menge Fehler, z. B. in schriftlichen Arbeiten.
Präpositionen, die ein lokales Verhältnis bezeichnen
Man unterscheidet zwei Arten von Präpositionen, die ein lokales Verhältnis bezeichnen:

Statische Präpositionen sind solche, die sich auf einen Ort beziehen, die sog. mobile prepositions beinhalten eine Bewegung, die Bewegung von einem Ort zu einem anderen.
Ob eine Präposition statisch ist oder eine Bewegung ausdrückt, ist abhängig vom Verb des Satzes, welches der Sprecher oder Schreiber wählt. So kann es vorkommen, dass dasselbe Verb je nach Bedeutung mit einer statischen oder Richtung bzw. Bewegung ausdrückenden Präposition steht.
