Was man wissen sollte

Der Infinitiv - the infinitive

(reiner Infinitiv).

Er kann in verschiedenen Formen auftauchen.

Zeit / Aktiv / Passiv / Aspekt Beispielsatz

Präsens, Aktiv, Infinitiv mit 'to' They want to travel to San Francisco to visit their uncle.
Präsens, Aktiv, Infinitiv ohne 'to' They must look for a new house.
Aktiv, Infinitiv mit 'to', Verlaufsform This time next week I'll be lying on the beach.
Aktiv, Infinitiv ohne 'to', Verlaufsform He may be having trouble with his teacher.
Perfekt, Aktiv, Infinitiv ohne 'to'   She could have passed the test.
Perfekt, Aktiv, Infinitiv ohne 'to', Verlaufsform   She can't have been watching tv all day.
Perfekt, Aktiv,  Infinitiv mit 'to', Verlaufsform He appears to have been drinking all the time.
Passiv, Infinitiv mit 'to' Susan expected to be invited to Joff's party.
Passiv, Infinitiv ohne 'to' That offer can't be accepted.
Passiv, Infinitiv ohne 'to', Verlaufsform She can't be lying in the sun all the time.
Passiv, Infinitiv mit 'to', Verlaufsform He seemed to be drinking less.

Funktion Beispielsatz

Subjekt To err is human, to forgive divine.
Objekt The soldier tried to shoot the enemy.
Attribut Beppo was the first to come and the last to go.
Prädikatsnomen The students wanted to learn Japanese well.
Adverbiale The French work to live, but they do not live to work.

Der Infinitiv als Subjekt

▪ ▪ grammatisches Subjekt

Beispiele:

To know you is to love you.
To swim is healthy, but to walk is the the healthiest exercise.

▪ ▪ logisches Subjekt

Beispiele:

With all this traffic it is difficult to arrive in time.
It is time to say goodbye.

Beispiele:

I hope to see them soon.
Jack refused to co-operate with us.

▪ ▪ Substantive

▪ ▪ Adjektive

▪ ▪ first und last

Beispiele:

attributive Ergänzung Beispielsatz

Substantiv It is time to leave.
Adjektiv He was unable to speak about the test.
first / last Her mother is the first to get up and the last to go to bed.

Satzbaumuster Beispielsatz

Verb + Infinitiv + Ergänzung She wants to learn French well.
Verb + Objekt + Infinitiv + Ergänzung She wants us to learn French well.

Beispiel:

The teacher ordered the doors to be locked.

Beispiele:

He came to bury Cesar, not to praise him.
The kids were too tired to walk the whole way back.
Derek was lucky enouigh not to get overrun by that lorry.
The Millers will not be that stupid as to agree to that contract.

Der Gebrauch des Infinitivs

▪ ▪ Der Infinitiv ohne to

Hilsverb Beispielsatz

can Can she really do it?
could She could not come to the party last Saturday.
will Will he be late again?
would Would you mind opening the parcel for me?
may May we come in?
might You might have read the book.
must They must be at the airport at 4 o'clock.
shall Mom, shall I lay the table?
should You shouldn't have said this, Pete.
do How do you do?

  Beispielsatz

dare
How dare you say a thing like that?
They dared not tell a lie.

need
You need not do any homework on Saturdays.
You need not be so worried, I think.

▪ ▪ ▪ Nach den Verben make (veranlassen), have (veranlassen) und let (zulassen, erlauben) wird der Infinitiv ohne to gebraucht.

  Beispielsatz

make
She makes her children stay at home.
Mom made me turn down the radio.

have

  Beispielsatz

see
She saw her child run across the road.
Tom saw the policemen come round the corner.
(over)hear
The detectives overheard them talk about Osama and Obama.

The police watched the robbers come out of the bank.

had better You' d better be going now, Sandra.
had better not We had better not tease them any longer.
why not Why not have one of these delicious pizzas now?
rather than She sold the apples half price rather than allow them to go bad.

Wenn zwei Infinitivkonstruktionen mit and, or, but, than und except zusammengefügt werden, so wird die zweite Infinitivkonstruktion in der Regel ohne to gebraucht.

 Beispielsatz

and Sheila would like to lie down and go to sleep.

or Do you want to see the baby or wait till later?

but He would do anything but go back to Charley's Place.

Beispiele:

Ann wanted to come back immediately.
They expect to stay for the night.
The Quirks desired to learn German, too.
Derek intended to know about the facts.
Sue likes to dress well.

Beispiele:

Ann wanted the twins to come back immediately.
They expect us to stay for the night.
The Quirks desired their children to learn German, too.
Derek intended Ian to know about the facts.
Sue likes her daughter to dress well.

Nomen / Adverb / Adjektiv + for + Nomen / Pronomen  + to + Infinitiv
  Beispielsatz

Nomen Here is a book for Alun to read in the holidays.
Adverb The plane was flying too high for the enemy to shoot down.
Adjektiv It is really difficult for young people to find the right job.

▪ ▪ ▪ In der Umgangssprache findet man eine Nebensatzkonstruktion mit that, wohingegen das Schriftenglisch nach Verben des Sagens, Vermutens und Denkens - unter häufigem Wegfall von to be - die nachstehende Konstruktion anwendet.

Verb des Sagens / Vermutens / Denkens + Objekt + to be + Ergänzung

to believe to deny to prove to think
to consider to guess to recommend to understand
to declare to imagine to suppose
Beispielsatz

Alfred considers this (to be) true.

Tom is supposed to be a great pianist.
The Quirks consider their daughter to be a great swimmer.

as to
too + adjective
too + adverb
adjective + enough
adverb + enough
Beispielsatz

Would you please be so kind as to get me a drink?
That newspaper is too difficult to read.
Jim spoke spoke softly enough to be understood by everybody present.
He is old enough to understand that.
The plane already flew high enough to escape the friendly fire.

to + Infinitiv

nur

to

Beispielsatz

He wanted to repair his daughter's bike, be he was not able to.
"Does Martha still dance that much?" - "Not as much as she used to.

▪ Beim split infinitive ist to vom Rest des Infinitivs getrennt.
