Der bestimmte Artikel
Im Englischen ist der bestimmte Artikel aus dem Demonstrativpronomen erwachsen und hat aus diesem Grund eine viel stärker hinweisende Funktion als im Deutschen.
Die Aufgabe des bestimmten Artikels ist es also eine Einzelperson, eine Einzelsache oder eine Einzelvorstellung aus einer Menge gleichartiger Personen, Tiere, Sachen oder Konzepte herauszuheben.
Ist die Hervorhebung überflüssig oder eine Heraushebung nicht möglich, dann steht der bestimmte Artikel nicht.
Überflüssig ist der bestimmte Artikel bei Eigennamen jeder Art, die schon Einzelwesen bezeichnen.
Eine Hervorhebung ist nicht möglich bei Stoffnamen, Gattungsnamen im Plural, Abstrakten, etc.
Der bestimmte Artikel kennt im Englischen nur eine Form für Singular und Plural: the.
Lediglich in der gesprochenen Sprache muss man die Aussprache vor vokalisch anlautendem Wort, das dem Artikel folgt, von / ðə / zu / ði / zu ändern.

Bei besonders starker Betonung eines Substantivs wird auch / ði / anstelle von / ðə / verwendet:
He was the / ði / landlord. |

Der bestimmte Artikel dient zur Heraushebung einer Einzelvorstellung aus einer Menge gleichartiger (oft mit Beifügung mit of).
Ist die Heraushebung überflüssig (bei Eigennamen) oder nicht beabsichtigt, fehlt er (oft im Gegensatz zum Deutschen).

Die Stellung des bestimmten Artikel
Der bestimmte Artikel steht vor dem dazugehörigen Substantiv.
Lediglich bei
all = alle | half = halb | twice = zweifach, doppelt |
both = beide | treble = dreifach | double = doppelt |
steht der bestimmte Artikel nach. Bei both ist er noch nicht einmal zwangsläufig notwendig.
Beispiele:

Der unbestimmte Artikel
Der unbestimmte Artikel ist aus dem Zahlwort one entstanden.
Diese ursprüngliche Bedeutung läßt sich heute noch erkennen, wenn a statt des betonten one vor hundred, thousand , million, etc. gebraucht wird.
In etlichen präpositionalen Ausdrücken erkennt man auch noch die ursprüngliche Bedeutung des indefiniten Artikels.
Das Englische kennt zwei Formen für den unbestimmten Artikel: a und an.
Der unbestimmte Artikel ist für alle Geschlechter und Fälle identisch.
Der unbestimmte Artikel a / ə / wird verwendet bei konsonantischem Anlaut des nachfolgenden Wortes.
Bei vokalischem Anlaut des auf den unbestimmten Artikel folgenden Wortes wird an / ən / eingesetzt.
Soll der unbestimmte Artikel besonders betont werden, so wird er / ei / bei konsonantisch anlautendem Folgewort oder / æn / bei vokalisch anlautendem Folgewort ausgesprochen.
